Mode[s] of Musar
The workshop "Mode[s] of Musar: From Ancient to Contemporary Discourse” brought together scholars from different disciplines of Jewish Studies, who elaborated on the relevance of musar in their respective research fields. By approaching musar as a literary mode, that is, "a broad but identifiable kind of literary method, mood, or manner that is not exclusively tied to a particular form or genre" (C. Baldick, 2008), and by focusing on the textual sources themselves rather than on a particular author, group, or intellectual current, the event served as a platform to discuss potential directions for future research. The workshop was held at the Institute for Jewish Philosophy and Religion at the University of Hamburg between October 17-19, 2023. The papers delivered by the participants, together with additional contributions, will be published as an edited volume with the Studies of Musar series (Boston and Leiden: Brill).
