"And behold, when the sinner keeps before his eyes the terrible events, unnatural deaths, avengings, desolate ruins, defeats, destructions, losses, uprootings, abominations, enslavements, wars, devastations, and unusual happenings that occur under the heavens—then, his uncircumcised heart will surrender to trembling and fear, lest one of them, or a little of them, or both of them strike him. And if a man remembers multiple agonies, he is shaken and feels as though there are cuts in his flesh, and his heart dies in his chest, until every corporeal desire leaves him, so that he desires the light of life, clings to the Holy-blessed-be-He and His Torah, and longs for his place of glory in Gan Eden every day."
(Elijah ben Solomon Avraham ha-Cohen, Shevet Musar)
