One must be careful in his deeds during the day, because his soul will ascend on high at night, […] and each night just before sleep, one must examine the deeds he performed that day, and he must confess and ask for mercy, as is explained in the Zohar, […]. And when he applies this method, he will always be in penance (teshuvah). The meaning is that in this way, the secret of the upper teshuvah (i.e. the Sefirah of Binah) will awaken, restoring each and every day as if they were the ten days of penance [which are observed from Rosh ha-Shanah till the Day of Atonement].
