We must admit that the intellect is powerless to produce reliable results in any moral problem. An approach to truth can be made only insofar as the heart is cleansed of bias. […] This is the only way: to destroy bias at it source. […]. This work is what we call “the work of mussar,” that is, self-discipline. We learn from this that one cannot get to the truth without mussar. This seminal insight is “the root of mussar.”
