[The verse] ‘And the way of life (derekh ḥayyim) is the rebuke that disciplines’ (Prov 6:23), refers to the way that one walks to the Land of the Living, that is the World to Come, hence it is called by that name, ‘the way toward life’. It is mastered and rectified by means of ‘the rebuke that disciplines’, which are the punishments that God inflicts upon a person.
