"Las madres judías de la época bíblica by Semah Rabiner" by Ilaria Briata
We are pleased to announce the publication of Ilaria Briata, "Las madres judías de la época bíblica di Semah Rabiner: modelli biblici di morale femminile." In Presenza/Assenza. L’identità ebraico-biblica femminile nelle letterature moderne di lingua spagnola e tedesca, edited by Paola Bellomi and Arturo Larcati. Firenze: Giuntina, 2023. 37–49. ("Las madres judías de la época bíblica by Semah Rabiner: Biblical Models of Feminine Morality").
The paper explores a late musar text, published in 1913 by Lithuanian rabbi Ṣemaḥ Rabinner (1862–1936) with the title Las madres judías de la época bíblica ("Jewish Mothers from the Age of the Bible"). The text, written in Ladino, was intended to instruct the female members of secularized Jewish society in Bulgaria and the Balkans on the lost virtues of the female heroines of Judaism. The essay analyzes the work in light of its representation of Sephardic identity and gender and contextualizes it the early modern and modern tradition of Sephardic musar.
