We cordially invite you to the Workshop "Mode[s] of Musar: From Ancient to Contemporary Discourse," which will be held between October 17-19, 2023 at the Institute for Jewish Philosophy and Religion at the University of Hamburg.
The workshop constitutes the final event of the Emmy Noether Junior Research Group "Jewish Moral Writings of the Early Modern Period." During the workshop, participants from different disciplines of Jewish Studies will elaborate on the relevance of the topic for their respective fields. By approaching musar as a literary mode, that is, "a broad but identifiable kind of literary method, mood, or manner that is not exclusively tied to a particular form or genre" (C. Baldick, 2008), and by focusing on the textual sources themselves rather than on a particular author, group, or intellectual current, the event will serve as a platform to discuss potential directions for future research.
