We cordially invite you to our joint Zoom workshop "Musar in Context", which will be held together with the Goethe University Frankfurt.
The collaborative workshop “Musar in Context” investigates the various modes of moral edification that manifest themselves in different religious traditions. In doing so, it asks how these traditions developed in exchange, or in competition with each other. By examining the flow of knowledge within these networks, it will pay particular attention to the function of cultural intermediaries involved in these processes. The discussion will center around the joint study of primary sources (original and translated) that illustrate the value of studying Jewish forms of moral instruction in the context of Christian and Muslim traditions of moral edification.
The workshop offers a platform for an exchange between emerging and establishedresearchers, and aims to consolidate and expand the research collaboration between members of the DFG Emmy Noether Group “Jewish Moralistic Writings of the Early Modern Period” based at the Institute for Jewish Philosophy and Religion at the University of Hamburg, the SPP project “Jewish-Christian Translation Cultures and the Pietist Mission” based at the Institute of Judaic Studies at Goethe University, the ERC project JEWTACT at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, and the Martin-Buber-Chair for Jewish Thought and Philosophy at Goethe University. The event is sponsored by the Johanna Quandt Young Academy at Goethe and in collaboration with the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften Bad Homburg.
